I love your newsletters but haven’t had much to read them lately. Was in hospital for 6 days and going to a bunch of doctors afterwards.
This is something that I’m adding to emails to most of the authors that I reply to. Please consider it and pass it on to other authors. [I used to code Library Systems last millennium.]
Please put the blurb / cover notes of your ePub books into the metadata . People read the blurb online before they download and then it is lost if it’s no longer associated with the ebook.
If you have a shelf of paperbacks, you can look at the covers and read the backs to decide what to read next. With ebooks, you might get the cover depending on which device you’re reading on, but otherwise all you have is a file name.
If it’s in a series, it would be nice if the series name and index (position) number were in the metadata too. Calibre has a way to do this – <meta name="calibre:series"… and "calibre:series_index"… but not everyone uses Calibre.
BookFunnel are on board with the blurb in the metadata but they want to avoid "proprietary" entries. I have suggested that, as the Dublin Core allows multiple description entries, a second description of the form "Series: xx…xx, Index: 9…9" or "Title: xx…xx, Volume: 9…9" (or other similar formats) would be in keeping with the standard. As long as it came after the "blurb" entry, it would not cause problems – most existing software ignores the bits they don't like.
I sent this to Vellum and got a nice reply. It may become an option but they have no time frame for it.

[ I have noticed that, although PDF files support the same Dublin Core metadata as ePub, it is rarely there – and when it is, it often contains the "working title" of a book and the author's real name rather than their pen-name as these may be inserted by default when writing is started. Also, earlier PDF versions sometimes used an "Info" entry with possibly conflicting data. Although my comments above also apply to PDF files, I'll stick to annoying people one format at a time.]
